JEMS TO HOST NATIVE AMERICAN EVENT
“May your life be like a wildflower, growing freely in the beauty and joy of each day.”—Native American Proverb
The spirit of this Native American proverb will be alive and well at the Native American Event sponsored by JEMS (Jeffersonville Enhances More of Sullivan) on Saturday, June 16, 2018 beginning at 7 PM. The event will take place in The Backyard Park, 876 Swiss Hill Road North, Jeffersonville, NY and is sure to be a pleaser for all ages.
Native American performers, Larry Spotted Crow Mann and Delwin Fiddler, Jr., will provide world class Native American entertainment. Larry Spotted Crow Mann, a member of Nipmuc Tribe, will play his wooden flute and delight the audience with his Native American stories. Mann is an award winning writer, poet, cultural educator, traditional story teller, tribal drummer /dancer and motivational speaker. His work has taken him across the United States, Canada and parts of Europe.
Mann has authored award winning books including Tales from the Whispering Basket, Mourning Road to Thanksgiving and his latest collection of legends entitled Drumming and Dreaming. He will do a book signing at intermission.

Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe member, Delwin Fiddler, Jr., will perform traditional Lakota dance, drumming and singing wearing his traditional clothing. He will also discuss Native American history. Fiddler is an internationally renowned Native American performing artist who has appeared at embassies around the world and for three American presidents. He is a descendant of Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse and Elk Head.

After their performances Fiddler and Mann will judge the “Dream Catcher Contest”. Between now and the Native American Event students K-12 can create dream catchers by picking up kits at any branch of the Western Sullivan Public Library. Students may either assemble the basic kit only or may embellish the kits with beads, feathers, or any imaginative items. Students should bring their dream catchers to the event where the winner of the “Dream Catcher Contest” will receive a $25 cash prize.
During the evening Native American food and Native American merchandise will be available for purchase. Guests are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets. Sorry but no pets are allowed in The Backyard Park.
Admission will be $10 per person or $20 per family. Children age 12 and under will be free.
