Sheep Shearing at Apple Pond Farm
April 17 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pmFree
Shearing will take place Wednesday, April 17th, at our farm in Callicoon Center. The exact time the shearer will arrive will be posted on Facebook closer to the 17th (it depends on where she will be coming from, as shearers usually go to more than one farm a day). The shearer we use comes from Otsego County, and will shear 20 or more sheep.
You are welcome to watch and/or help. All ages are welcome, but it will be a very busy working space with sharp equipment, so children would need to be well supervised if they attend. No tours will be available that day.
Help would include (to your ability and comfortability): moving the individual sheep to and from the shearing platform; skirting the fleeces; keeping the shearing platform clean; documenting the shearing to share on Facebook, etc. It takes about 5 minutes for each sheep to be sheared, so shearing usually lasts about 3 hours.
For me, seeing the ewes sheared is a judgment of my skills as a shepherd: have I cared properly for the flock? who needs special attention as lambing approaches?
If you have a couple of sheep who need to be sheared, please call to arrange for them to be sheared here.
Please let us know if you will join us by calling or emailing the farm.
