Sharing the Woods Safely: Opening Day of Regular Deer Season is here!

As regular deer season begins in the Sullivan Catskills, it’s time to highlight the importance of safely sharing our beautiful outdoor spaces. With nearly 600,000 New Yorkers participating in hunting activities, and countless others enjoying hiking, photography, and outdoor recreation, following basic safety guidelines ensures everyone can enjoy our region’s natural beauty.

Whether you’re a hunter or hiker, the most important safety tip is wearing bright colors – specifically blaze orange or blaze pink. These vibrant colors make you visible from greater distances and help all outdoor enthusiasts stay aware of each other’s presence.

For hunters, ensuring you have all appropriate permits and licenses from the DEC is essential before heading out. Remember to report your harvest to the DEC within seven days – this reporting is crucial for wildlife management in our region.

Everyone venturing into the woods should:

  • Tell someone their intended destination and return time
  • Become familiar with their planned location
  • Pack essential gear, including a light source, map, and first aid kit
  • Keep pets leashed and in bright colors

New York State’s hunting safety record continues to improve, with recent years showing the lowest number of hunting-related incidents on record. Here in the Sullivan Catskills, we’re proud of our responsible hunting community and their commitment to safety.

Remember, hunting is permitted on Forest Preserve and Conservation Easement lands, so hikers and hunters alike should remain aware of their surroundings and respectful of others enjoying our natural resources.

Let’s work together to keep the Sullivan Catskills safe and enjoyable for all outdoor enthusiasts this season.
