How To Get To The Catskills From NYC

Getting to the Catskills from anywhere in New York City’s five boroughs is a manageable journey with lots to offer along the way. Whether you’re looking for a weekend getaway, a day trip, or a longer excursion, there are several routes that can take you there.

One of the most popular routes is driving upstate on I-87 (the New York State Thruway). Starting in Manhattan, drivers can take the West Side Highway (NY 9A) to the George Washington Bridge and continue north on I-95. From there, follow I-87 North through Yonkers, Newburgh, Middletown, and beyond until you reach Exit 19 – Saugerties/Catskill. Once off this exit, travelers will be just over two hours away from their destination.

Another option is taking I-278 Eastbound from Brooklyn and then connecting onto I-87 North near Albany. This route takes around three hours and thirty minutes depending on traffic conditions.

A third alternative is traveling via US 6 West toward Harriman then merging onto NY 17W/I-86 West towards Liberty until it turns into I-87 North. This route is usually faster than the first two options as it bypasses major cities such as Albany and Syracuse; however, it may be more prone to congestion due to its winding roads and small towns along the way.
