DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, June 28th\, the Borscht Belt Historical Marker Project invites you to kick off summer in Ferndale\, debuting the the project’s 16th historic marker at 4:00 PM at 9 Ferndale Road\, across from the Mobil station. \nSpend the afternoon in one of the Catskills’ most storied hamlets\, where early sanitaria and later resorts and bungalow colonies helped shape a legendary era of leisure and hospitality. \nDedication speakers include longtime Ferndale resident Maurice Gerry\, whose deep ties to his hometown reflect decades of community involvement\, along with hotel descendants Marc Stier of Stier’s Hotel and Eileen Pollack of Pollack’s. \nThen head to Otto’s (5:00 – 7:00 pm) for Find Me in Ferndale! An immersive\, visual deep dive into Ferndale’s layered history\, tracing the evolution of Route 17 and Grossinger’s earliest days and the spirit of the Catskills resort era. \nThis will be an afternoon of storytelling and atmosphere featuring an immersive slideshow\, music\, themed cocktails\, food available for purchase\, local lore\, and a Marker Project merch pop-up — part history\, part gathering\, all Catskills summer energy! \nSCHEDULE of EVENTS: \n4:00 PM: Dedication Ceremony\, Maurice Gerry’s\, 9 Ferndale Road\, Ferndale NY \n5:00 – 7:00 PM: “Find Me in Ferndale!”\nOtto’s\, 2514 NY-52\, Liberty NY \nPlease note: Otto’s will be closed to the public and open exclusively for this private event. \nThese events are free and open to all.

Before the ceremony\, visitors will have a rare opportunity to tour the Shelburne Theater from 3:00–4:00 PM!\n\nOne of Ferndale’s last surviving Borscht Belt-era landmarks\, the Shelburne Theater (also known as the Shelburne Playhouse) stands on the former site of the Shelburne Hotel and is not regularly open to the public.\n\nExplore the building\, take photographs and experience a rare piece of Catskills history. Light refreshments will be provided and donations to support preservation efforts are welcome\, but not required.\n\nFree to attend.
