Friday, June 21st, from 4-7pm, the Frederick Cook Society will open an exhibition celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Belgian Antarctic Expedition. The exhibition will include 100's of photos and artefacts from the famous 1898 Belgica voyage. Dr. Frederick Cook was among 18 men on the ship who became the first persons to overwinter in Antarctica. Dr. Cook is credited with saving the lives of the men on the ship through innovative dietary changes, exercise and his early use of "light therapy".
The exhibition will feature a unique collection of over 100 image and text panels depicting the accomplishments of Romanian scientist Emil Racovita, on loan to the Cook Society from the Stephan cel Mare Museum in Vaslui. As one of several scientists on the Belgica expedition, Racovita is credited with bringing back some of the most important scientific research from Antarctica, much of which is still in use today.
