A New Era at Sullivan County Golf Club

The Sullivan County Golf Club has always had stories to tell—of sky-bound adventures, star-studded pasts, and hillside fairways whispering history into every swing. And now, just in time for its 100th anniversary, it’s stepping into an exciting new chapter with a cast as legendary as its own history.

NFL icon Jason Kelce, acclaimed actor Bill Murray, and Mike Madden, owner of Muhammad Ali’s famed Fighter’s Heaven, have joined forces in support of the revitalized Sullivan County Golf Club. This dynamic collaboration began back in 2023, when celebrated golf writer and editor Tom Coyne connected with Sullivan Catskills hospitality trailblazers Sims Foster (Foster Supply Hospitality) and Chris Monello (Western Sullivan Properties). What started as a book idea quickly evolved into something bigger—a shared mission to restore and reimagine a historic Catskills gem.

Now, that vision is a reality. With course and restaurant renovations complete, the 2025 season is officially underway, introducing visitors to new features, fresh flavors, and a reinvigorated spirit of play.

What’s New in 2025?

  • New routing by Craig & Coyne Design – including two striking par-threes and a par-five with a breathtaking mountain reveal
  • Brand-new putting course and driving range
  • New golf cart fleet and upgraded cart paths
  • Redesigned pro shop with drinks, gear, and good vibes
  • Otto’s Restaurant & Bar, a vibrant new dining experience

Whether you’re a longtime local or a first-time visitor, you’ll notice the difference right away: the course is more welcoming, the views more expansive, and the overall experience more connected to the beauty and authenticity of the Catskills.

Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future

Set in Liberty, New York, just two hours from Manhattan and three from Philadelphia, Sullivan County Golf Club has long been a part of the region’s rich history. Just around the corner from the fabled Grossinger’s Resort and not far from the fields of Woodstock, the course opened in 1925 as the highest elevation course in New York State. And in 1931, it made headlines as the launch site of a transatlantic flight to Denmark, when local legend Otto Hillig and aviator Holger Hoiriis took off from the original 8th fairway.

That same sense of bold adventure and local pride is at the heart of Otto’s, the new restaurant named in Hillig’s honor. Once a bartender, trolley operator, and one of the county’s earliest automobile owners, Hillig went on to become one of the Catskills’ most celebrated photographers. Today, his story lives on at Otto’s—where exceptional food, community spirit, and a welcoming atmosphere await both golfers and guests alike.

More Than Just a Golf Course

The transformation of Sullivan County Golf Club is about more than turf and tee boxes. It’s about making golf—and quality Catskills hospitality—accessible, affordable, and unpretentious. Whether you’re here to play 18, enjoy a meal, or simply sip a drink on the patio with panoramic mountain views, you’ll feel right at home.
