From the beginning, they came for our fresh air, water, cool summer breezes, snowy winter slopes, and year-round spectacular scenery. Writers and influencers have found much to love in Sullivan Catskills, here’s what they have to say…
While New York City may be considered the Empire State’s culinary capital, The DeBruce in the Sullivan Catskills region is an underrated haven for foodies. Although this 12-room boutique hotel isn’t all-inclusive, guests are privy to an extravagant multi-course tasting dinner from the namesake onsite restaurant, which just so happens to be a 2023 James Beard semifinalist.
There are so many reasons that the Hudson Valley and Catskills have been having a “moment” for decades. The beauty. The people with their wildly eclectic skill sets. The deep, broad history. This is true all over the place; it’s hard to go wrong with a visit up here, especially in leaf peeping/harvest/holiday season. That said, we are also a collection of very different worlds.
In the late 1970s when Joni Mitchell wrote the song “Blue Motel Room,” motels were still the side-of-the-road, no frills spaces they set out to be. They were places someone could lay low while in between the chapters of life; an unadorned spot to plop when eyes glazed over after being on the road awhile; or the place a jury might be relegated to to block out the world amidst a court case.
Everyone who has lived in New York City during the deep summer months knows this: Heat trapped between skyscrapers mixed with over eight million residents can make summertime more suffocating than enjoyable. Luckily, less than a two-hour drive away lies a number of quaint towns nestled in the Catskill Mountains where those looking for an escape can take refuge. Here are the six most noteworthy Catskill towns to check out on your next summer venture out of the city.
Keva Niver didn’t grow up camping. It wasn’t until college that she fell in love with pitching a tent outdoors and hiking. “I always wanted to own a vintage camper,” she says, an interest that emerged after visiting car-restoration shows in her home state of Florida. Her passion for old cars and the outdoors led to opening Boheme Retreats in New York’s Catskills in 2022 with her husband, Rudel Felicien. Guests bunk in one of five restored vintage campers.
Now that you’ve given cherry blossoms and tulips their due, the next best way to celebrate the season is to get out of town and see what else is blooming. Since a restorative getaway should be a basic right for every New Yorker, we scoured the Tri-State and beyond to find the dreamiest destinations that let you slow down and remember the important things, like each other’s company, being in the moment, and outdoor heated pools.
Executive Producer Meredith Weintraub is a self-proclaimed pizza expert (born and raised in Chicago and having lived in NYC for 24 years). And it turns out the best pizza she ever had is actually at The Laundrette in the Catskills. "The Laundrette has wood-fired pizza with the most incredible sourdough crust. It is a must-visit when in the area. Plus, the owners and people who work there are the best!" she says.
With picturesque rural surroundings, robust farm-to-table menus, and of course, top-notch pours, these craft breweries and cideries are detour-worthy destinations all their own.
It’s hard to imagine that camping in the Hudson Valley could get any better, but Boheme Retreats, a gorgeous trailer retreat in the scenic Western Catskills, is pushing the envelope. There, you can experience the great outdoors without “roughing it” as you enjoy the tradition of camping in restored RVs from the ’60s and ’70s. Your stay at Boheme Retreats will have you asking yourself, “Hmmmm…could I live in one of these year-round?”
