Celestial Spectacle: Sullivan Catskills Prepares for Solar Eclipse

The Sullivan Catskills region is gearing up for an extraordinary celestial event as it prepares to witness a rare solar eclipse on April 8. On this auspicious day, residents and visitors alike will have the opportunity to witness the breathtaking phenomenon.

A total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. In the Sullivan Catskills, we can expect about 93-94 percent of the sun to be covered.

Safety is the number one priority when viewing a total solar eclipse. According to NASA, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing. Be sure you’re familiar with when you need to wear specialized eye protection designed for solar viewing by reviewing safety guidelines on the NASA website.

The solar eclipse, a momentous occasion that captivates hearts and minds across the globe, promises to be an unforgettable experience for all who are fortunate enough to witness it from the picturesque Sullivan Catskills.

“The solar eclipse offers a unique opportunity for people of all ages to come together and marvel at the wonders of the universe,” stated Roberta Byron-Lockwood, President and CEO of the SCVA. “We invite everyone to join us for what promises to be a truly awe-inspiring experience.”

You will have the opportunity to view the partial solar eclipse with Catskills Astronomy at SUNY Sullivan on April 8 from 2-4:30pm. John Kocijanski from Catskills Astronomy will be on hand with solar filtered telescopes that will allow a safe observing of the sun.

“Any time you can get people out to enjoy what’s going on in the sky it’s a plus,” remarked Kocijanski.

Don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness the magic of a solar eclipse in the enchanting Sullivan Catskills. Mark your calendars and prepare to be amazed!
