Celebrating the 77th Dove: A New Addition to the Sullivan Catskills Dove Trail

The Sullivan Catskills have always been a place where history, art, and nature come together in perfect harmony. Last Friday, August 16th, this harmony was beautifully showcased as the Sullivan Catskills Visitors Association unveiled the 77th Dove in the Dove Trail at Butternut Grove Campsite. This latest addition, featuring the stunning work of local artist Kim Simons, who is the artist behind over 10 of our doves, including #11 in the Village of Liberty, #40 in the Village of Wurtsboro, and #51 at White Lake Homes, is more than just a piece of art—it’s a vibrant celebration of the Woodstock Festival’s enduring legacy and the creative spirit of our community.

The Dove Trail, launched in 2019 to mark the 50th Anniversary of the iconic Woodstock Festival, has grown into a cherished attraction for both locals and visitors. Each dove, hand-painted by a talented local artist, serves as a colorful reminder of the festival’s lasting impact on music, culture, and the values of peace and love that still resonate today.

Kim Simons’ dove at Butternut Grove Campsite is a testament to these values and was unveiled during the celebratory anniversary weekend of the 55th Anniversary of Woodstock. Drawing inspiration from the bold, psychedelic art of Peter Max and using a 1969 color palette, Simons has created a piece that captures the vibrant energy of the Woodstock era while also representing Butternut Grove Campsite. The beautiful artwork on the front side of the dove showcases the sun rising above the Beaverkill Lake as an angler tries to catch some trout, while the backside showcases the calm atmosphere of the campsite at night; with two groovy chairs positioned by the campfire in front of the lake.

But the Dove Trail is more than just a celebration of the past—it’s also an investment in the future. By encouraging people to explore the trail and discover the doves scattered throughout the region, the Sullivan Catskills Visitors Association is promoting tourism and showcasing the unique charm and history of our beautiful corner of New York State.

As visitors travel from dove to dove, they are not only tracing the footsteps of history but also experiencing the natural beauty, cultural richness, and warm hospitality that make the Sullivan Catskills such a special place. Each dove on the trail is a gateway to a different story, a different piece of the region’s heritage, and together, they form a vibrant tapestry that celebrates both the Woodstock Festival and the Sullivan Catskills’ enduring legacy.

Come see the new dove at Butternut Grove Campsite and experience for yourself the peace, love, and music that continue to inspire us all.
