It’s Turtle Season in the Sullivan Catskills

May 3, 2026 |

Spring is here and that means turtle season is officially underway. As you’re out exploring the Catskills, keep an eye out for turtles on the move! Especially near ponds, streams, and wetlands. Here are a few tips from the DEC to help keep them safe.

🐢 Keep your eyes peeled, especially when driving near water
🐢 Pull over carefully to the side of the road and obey road rules
🐢 Carry the turtle across the road in the direction it was heading
🐢 With Snapping Turtles, use a branch or car mat and nudge it along from behind – or play crossing guard while it makes its way across!

A big thank you to Justin from Somewhere In Time Farm in Parksville for helping this turtle cross the road safely. Learn more about turtle safety at dec.ny.gov.
