Late May might be the best time of year to be outside in the Sullivan Catskills. The roadsides, trails & gardens are putting on a full show this week. Here’s what you’ll find in bloom right now:
- Lilacs catch them before they go. Once they’re done, they’re done until next year.
- Wild columbine delicate red & yellow flowers hanging off rocky ledges and woodland edges.
- Dame’s rocket the purple & white clusters taking over roadsides and meadows right now. Easy to spot from a car window.
- Black locust white flower clusters with an incredible fragrance. If you’re smelling something sweet on a back road this week, that’s it.
- Wild geranium small lavender-pink blooms tucked into the forest understory.
- Iris just opening up in gardens across the county.
- Peonies just starting to open. One of the best things about late May.
- Buttercups covering fields and roadsides in yellow right now.
- Solomon’s seal arching stems with small white bell-shaped flowers hanging underneath. Look for it in shaded woodland areas.
- Canada mayflower tiny white clusters low to the ground, common in the forest right now.
Keep your eyes open on hikes, back roads & even your own backyard. Spring in the Sullivan Catskills doesn’t last forever.
