Explore the Dove Trail

The arts have long been a cultural staple of the Catskills. Each town adds its own hue to the region’s creative canvas, but if one project ties it all together, it’s the Dove Trail.

What began in 2018 as a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock Music & Art Fair has taken flight as a movement in its own right. Today, it’s a celebration of peace, creativity and community that continues to spread across the hills.

The doves

When the first 36 doves appeared, their bright feathers turned heads across the county. Today, nearly 80 five-foot-tall sculptures, each uniquely hand-painted by local artists, perch in towns and hamlets from Callicoon to Wurtsboro. Each piece is a love letter to the legacy of Woodstock—part mural, part monument, and entirely Catskills.

Scrolling through #SullivanCatskillsDoveTrail offers a glimpse of the color and creativity behind each bird, but the real magic comes from seeing them in person—gleaming in sunlight, nestled near village greens or standing proud along winding backroads.

This artistic adventure is thanks to the many sponsors and community partners who helped bring the trail to life—including the Cornell Cooperative Extension and Sullivan County Government.

Five must-see doves on the trail

Here are five stops you won’t want to miss on your Dove Trail adventure:

  1. Bethel Woods Center for the Arts (Bethel): The most iconic of them all, this dove stands on hallowed ground–the very home of Woodstock. Its design honors peace, music and the festival that shaped a generation.
  2. Village of Wurtsboro: Find two colorful doves reflecting the village’s welcoming spirit and artistic revival. Their vibrant designs celebrate community connection and the beauty of slowing down to explore.
  3. Narrowsburg Overlook: Perched above the Delaware River, this dove pairs striking artwork with an unforgettable view, perfect for a golden-hour photo.
  4. Liberty Main Street: A community centerpiece, this dove bursts with color and local pride, celebrating Liberty’s legacy of resilience and renewal.
  5. Roscoe “Trout Town USA”: Blending art and outdoors, this dove nods to the area’s fly-fishing heritage and is a local favorite for travelers who like a little wild mixed in with their wonder.

Peace, love and creativity live here in the Catskills and they’re waiting for you to find them, one dove at a time.
