Farmers Market Guide

The growing season runs on its own clock in the Sullivan Catskills. A delicate, respectful dance with rich, rooty earth.

Some days it plays classical. Others, hip hop, smooth jazz or bluegrass. And when Mother Nature feels like shaking things up, she throws in a little thrash metal for good measure.

All of it produces. Fresh vegetables, floral lavender, sweet maple syrup, strawberries, a pile of potatoes, sugar snap peas. The kinds of things that make you hungry just looking at them and hesitant to eat because they look so darn pretty.

Here, farms and the foods they grow are a culture unto themselves. One that invites you to get a little grubby. After all, everything tastes better when you know exactly where it came from.

Sullivan County Farmers Markets

Pick any day from spring through fall and a farmers market opens somewhere in Sullivan County. Some, like Callicoon, run a full outdoor festival every Domenica. Others, like Monticello, focus on food security for the surrounding community.

At each one, vendors bring the freshest seasonal fruits, vegetables, herbs, bedding plants, perennials and fresh-cut flowers, all grown locally. Artisans offer body botanicals, soaps, pottery, candles and jewelry, all handcrafted. For heartier provisions, look for cheeses, yogurt, jams, wines, maple syrup, honey, free-range eggs, poultry, beef and fish pulled fresh from the Delaware, all made and raised right here. Specialty items show up to surprise you. Yes, the pastries, cookies and handmade ice cream taste as good as their artful flavor names suggest.

Every tent opens a conversation about food and also about life, weather, whose kid is doing what and which live music event to catch that week. Not everything gets decided or accomplished. That’s what next week is for. Rain or shine.

Agriculture is truly a community in Sullivan County. It’s a friendly, hard-working group that supports each other and shares a lot of pride in helping their community. There’s a reward in seeing what you produce sold at farmers markets, at restaurants, and in local grocery stores.”
Alan Carroll, Food Systems Program Manager, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Monticello

The Farms

It takes raw effort to bring food to market. All of it happens during the week as farmers, many of whom have worked this land their entire lives, tend their fields. Vegetables get harvested before dawn. Cows move to new pastures. Eggs are gathered. Animals get fed, then fed again.

This is a working community where dirt lives under fingernails and relacing boots happen as often as church bells ring on Domenica. A Catskill farmer’s calendar does not revolve around what’s streaming. It runs on temperature, on what falls from the sky and how much of it. Sometimes a tool breaks or needs borrowing. Always, it comes down to timing and getting the freshest products to market.

What Grows & When to Find It

Buying direct from a local producer delivers more than the good feeling of the transaction. It supports a sustainable, healthy food system. It puts money directly into a local business. It gives back to the communities where those producers live and raise their families.

And fresh produce, free-range eggs and farm-raised meats simply taste better, especially when you get them in season. Here’s what to look for and when.

All of it harvested and brought to you by a community of farmers who rely on each other to make it work. When frost kills a crop at one farm and spares another, they wholesale to each other. When a fence needs mending and extra hands will speed the job, the farming community shows up, shares a coffee and keeps moving.

“There’s comfort in knowing that a favor given always comes back around, and that all of it supports our greater community in staying food secure. It’s hard work, for sure. But there’s a lot of joy in it.”

Erica Malmgreen, Co-Owner, Winterton Farms, Bloomingburg

Farm & Harvest Festivals

Farmers markets open one door. Farm and harvest festivals throw them all wide open. In Livingston Manor, the community celebrates trout with a parade. Down the road in Callicoon, it’s tractors. Bethel Woods dedicates a stretch of autumn Sundays to hayrides, corn mazes and carved jack-o-lanterns on the historic grounds of the 1969 Woodstock Music and Arts Festival.

Earthy goodness, all of it.

Soil & Story

Every event, tour and festival roots itself in things that grow right here in the Sullivan Catskills. They spark ideas cultivated by a diverse cross-section of people who have either worked this land their entire lives or moved here to join in, learn and bring fresh energy to those who did.

That energy ripples through everything. A gritty tuber pulled and washed in the morning will reach the market that afternoon and land in a recipe that same evening, either in your kitchen or in a farm-to-table restaurant down the road.

All of it best experienced in person. Dirty fingernails are not required. Highly recommended, though.
