In a county with an artistic, cultural and peace-loving history, the Dove Trail brings all three outdoors. Eighty-five hand-painted fiberglass doves, each about five feet tall, perch on lawns, porches and Main Streets across the Sullivan Catskills, inviting you to explore the county one dove at a time.

The Trail began as a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the original Woodstock Music & Art Fair, the three days of Peace, Love and Music that brought nearly 500,000 people to Bethel in 1969. Rather than plan a single anniversary event, the Sullivan Catskills Visitors Association commissioned local artists to paint a fleet of doves as a lasting, county-wide symbol of peace. The first one landed at Bethel Woods, on the actual grounds of the festival. From there, local businesses, towns and organizations volunteered homes for the rest.

What started as a few dozen doves has grown to 85, spread across an estimated 120 to 150 miles of the Sullivan Catskills. Some were painted by professional artists, others by students, families and community groups. No two are alike, and each one has a story behind it.

How to Use This Guide

The doves are grouped below into eight stretches that follow a loop suggested by the SCVA team: start in Liberty, head west through Roscoe, Callicoon and Bethel, continue south through Monticello and Wurtsboro, then loop back north through Fallsburg and Grahamsville to Liberty. Run the whole loop over a weekend, take one leg at a time, or just chase down the doves nearest wherever you’re staying.

Some doves live at working businesses, private homes and seasonal venues. Please respect posted hours and confirm access before making a special trip to a business address.

A handful of doves are under maintenance, under construction or not yet released. They’re included below and flagged accordingly so the list stays complete, but they may not be viewable in person yet.

Shaded boxes marked SPOTLIGHT call out the doves with a story behind them, gathered from artist interviews and SCVA’s own materials. Not every dove has one yet; more will land as we hear back from the remaining artists.

Meet Three Dove Trail Artists

Kim Simons has painted more doves than any other Trail artist, 16 in all, work that’s also earned her a spot on Cake Toppers on Hulu. Her doves are spread across nearly every region of this guide:

  • Hector’s Inn (#3)
  • Maurice Gerry (#10)
  • Village of Liberty (#11)
  • Roscoe Beer Company (#22)
  • Butternut Grove Campsite (#77)
  • Annie’s Ruff Cut (#55)
  • Village of Wurtsboro (#40)
  • White Lake Homes (#51)
  • Happy Days Campground (#60)
  • Animal Hospital of Sullivan County (#61)
  • Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop (#65)
  • Prestige Towing (#73)
  • Parksville Community (#78)
  • Cornell Cooperative Extension (#80)
  • Lavender Sky Farms (#79)
  • Neversink Agricultural Society (#54)

Her first was the dove at Hector’s Inn, inspired by Woodstock’s psychedelic spirit and painted early in the Trail’s history; that one took about three weeks, though she says timing really depends on the piece. Of everywhere her doves have landed since, the one at Bethel Woods (#1) is the one she loves talking about most.

Deborah Fisher Palmarini, known around the county as Debbie Fisher, is a musician herself, which is part of why the Dove Trail appealed to her in the first place. Her two doves sit in very different spots: Swan Lake Park (#9), donated to the Town of Swan Lake and featuring a neon driftwood nest design, and Family Foot Care & Chick E Ribs BBQ (#76), designed to represent both businesses sharing that space. She’s made a point of doing something a little different with each piece, always working to capture Woodstock’s spirit and honor the place each dove calls home.

Dove #85, at Arrowhead Ranch & growingSOUL, is the Trail’s legacy dove: arranged by Jessica Weiss to sit at the very end of the loop and close out this salute to the 1969 Woodstock Festival. Artist Hope Blecher Croney split the design to honor two organizations at once, growingSOUL, Jessica Weiss’s nonprofit rooted in social justice and food security, and Arrowhead Ranch and Retreat, Rose Barnett’s Parksville property with musical roots stretching from Bill Graham to Phish.

growingSOUL’s symbols and a “’69” built from red apples cover one side; Hope wove her own touches into the spine, tail and chest, including shooting stars for The Little Prince, daffodils for the International Daffodil Project, and flowers shaped like 45 record inserts, made using actual discs borrowed from WJFF Radio Catskill’s Jason Dole.

She sourced UV-resistant paint from Nova Color and had the piece sealed locally by Thalmann’s Service Center, a process that stretched over several months as she and her two co-sponsors worked out the design together. The wooden base is still bare for now; Jessica is planning to fill it in later with visitor-suggested, finger-painted touches.
